Suffering is an inevitable part of living in a fallen world, when Adam and Eve chose to turn their backs on God they brought pain and suffering into a perfect world. Often times people question why God would allow bad things to happen to good people. I would counter that question; why does God allow good things to happen to bad people? The only “good person” to exist was Jesus. Regardless of our good deeds, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). We are inherently sinful and the only path to redemption is through Jesus Christ.
In the Bible there are several stories about righteous people enduring suffering. Job was described as a righteous and blameless man (Job 1:1), but God allowed him to go through immeasurable suffering to test his faith. Joseph was a righteous man who was betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery, then falsely accused of a crime and thrown into prison.
How does a born again Christian deal with pain and suffering? Why would God allow his children to suffer? We do not belong to this world (John 15:19) but we are still in the world, God doesn’t allow us to simply ascend into Heaven the moment we are saved. We are aliens and strangers” in this world (1 Peter 2:11), we can take comfort knowing that this world is not our home. God will take everything that happens to us and use it for good.
